plotting a path forward for texas youth

In 2020, the State Board of Education revised the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Health Education for the first time since the 1990s, fundamentally changing the map for adolescent health in the state. You can read the drafts of the TEKS and the approved final version here

In 2025, the 89th Texas Legislature enacted Senate Bill 12, bringing significant changes to school-based health education. The legislation strengthens parental rights including opt-in and grievance procedures, and clarifies curriculum requirements. Charter schools and Districts of Innovation are now required to fully comply with Texas Education Code Section 28.004, including School Health Advisory Council requirements, curriculum adoption processes, and parental consent provisions, effective beginning in the 2025–2026 school year.
